Onion Shallots

The shallot is a cultivar of onion, classified as Allium ascalonicum, a different species till 2010. The correct name of this particular species is A. cepa. Interestingly, its siblings include garlic, chives, Chinese onions, leeks, and more.

It is believed that these were originated in Southwest Asia or Central Asia. And thereafter they were brought to Subcontinent as well as the Mediterranean. The name shallot is taken from the “Ashkelon” an old city where it is believed that these have been originated from most of the Greeks in the old times.
