The shallot is a cultivar of onion, classified as Allium ascalonicum, a different species till 2010. The correct name of this particular species is A. cepa. Interestingly, its siblings include garlic, chives, Chinese onions, leeks, and more.
It is believed that these were originated in Southwest Asia or Central Asia. And thereafter they were brought to Subcontinent as well as the Mediterranean. The name shallot is taken from the “Ashkelon” an old city where it is believed that these have been originated from most of the Greeks in the old times.
Season of Onion Shallots:
Just like garlic, shallots have a head composed of many cloves. There are many colors that a shallot can have to get distinguished from one another: rose red, grey, golden brown, and even more. In many regions around the world (Northern Hemisphere) these are planted in the autumn season (September to October). Whereas other areas may have them at the start of March as planting time accordingly. It is also advised not to plant them in recently fertilized soil with organic matter.
Taste and texture of Onion Shallots:
Like already mentioned there are many varieties and types of onion shallots. And at the same time, it is very obvious that one can confuse to differentiate between ordinary onions and onion shallots. The latter is sweeter than the regular ones. This is the reason why having raw onion shallot is comparatively more appropriate particularly in salads and more. Similarly, onion grows individually but shallot grows in a cluster like garlic. Also, these have cloves when peeled on the other hand onions have rings.
